The societies of thousands of years ago became buried in sand and mud. Some of the places where people once lived were covered by soil because of earthquakes. Others disappeared because of war, fire, flood, or widespread disease. Whatever the reason, cities were left to be found centuries later. Beneath the surface of each place, there is a story of the people who lived there. There are some people who uncover these cities and examine the things that people made and left there. They try to find out pieces of the story.

With the development of computer technology, there is a new disease to worry about. Computer “virus” is infecting computers in companies, homes, and universities. This virus spreads rapidly, and then disturbs the systems. The virus secretly attaches itself to other programs and then can delete or alter files. The damage is beyond our imagination. Now it's time to take some action against it.

It was becoming darker and the stars were appearing slowly one by one. The storm stopped a while, but not for long. Strong winds arose and the waves tossed me and the remains of my ship on the surface. I shall never survive, I thought. Desperately, I swam to a piece of wood. Clinging to it, I felt my hands and feet aching with cold. I felt that I would never be warm again.

My little son Mike saw his elder sister drawing kisses when she wrote letters to her friends. After he'd finished drawing a picture, Mike also drew kisses at the foot of the page. I asked him what they were. He explained they were kisses for me. Delighted, I pointed to my cheek, asking, “Can I have one here, too?” Mike thought for a while. “Just a minute,” said the little boy, “I'll get my pen.”

After listening to your advice on how to discount prices, my wife and I set off in search of a TV set. What we wanted wasn't on sale. So, deciding to use one of your approaches, I asked, “Can you give us a sale price?” To my surprise, the salesperson said, “Let me check,” and knocked off $100. It was a really huge saving, Mr. Brown. I'd like to appreciate your advice. I'll certainly use this wonderful approach again.

Tycho Brahe, an astronomer from Denmark, devoted his life to the recording of precise observations of the heavens. At the age of fourteen, he became interested in astronomy. One of his achievements was to reform the technique of astronomical observation. In 1572, Tycho shocked the scientific communities by discovering a new star. He proved the ancient theory that no change could occur in the heavens was wrong.

My father never minded spending money on his children's education, but he objected to spending on everything else. As he always wore an old hat, he had just one line straight across his forehead. Above the line his skin was white. Below it his face was burned dark. His hat was completely worn. One day my mother took it out to get rid of it. But he didn't let her throw it away. My father gave me his old hat and said, “Take this. It is still good.”

A famous movie star asked a photographer not to take pictures of him smoking during an interview. He said he didn't want children to see him smoking. It's a pity that he didn't think of it earlier. Now I refuse to watch any of his films after I was forced to watch him smoke continuously in a movie. Actors should know that they are role models. I find it very irritating to watch actors needlessly smoking.

Today many people are concerned about environmental problems. Among the most serious problems are air and water pollution. The destruction of natural areas, such as forests and wetlands, is another concern. Wastes―from everyday garbage to dangerous chemicals―also damage our environment. These problems exist all over the world. They affect the survival of all living things. Happily, there are some ways to deal with these problems.

Any effort to restrict the freedom of the press is rightly blamed. However, this freedom can easily be abused. Though we may enjoy reading about the lives of others, we would not equally enjoy reading about ourselves. Reporters say that facts are sacred, but they can give terrible sufferings to the individuals by publishing details about their private lives. Such a practice should be stopped.

No bird has been written about so much by poets as the nightingale. ① Many poets have made an attempt to describe the song of the nightingale. ② The attempt to describe it goes back to Aristophanes, an ancient Greek poet. ③ To be a poet, one must love the place where he was born. ④ According to him, the nightingale sings only at night and at almost any season of the year. ⑤ But this isn't true : The nightingale can only be heard from April to June in England.
Each person wants clean water, good food, and conveniences of life. To get these things, people must use energy. However, using too much energy may be causing the serious changes in normal weather. The burning of coal and oil makes the oceans warmer, affecting weather patterns. Indeed, the use of energy is the cause of more destructive weather condition. Therefore, we should reconsider our lifestyle and reduce the use of energy.

Have you ever thought about how many seconds you have? By the time you reach the age of 75, you'll have lived for nearly 2.5 billion seconds. It seems quite a lot of time. But time flies fast. That evening Jack went home from the office by bus as usual. He sat next to an old woman. She had an umbrella on the floor near her. When the bus reached his stop, he picked up her umbrella and stood up. “Hey!” the woman said. “That's my umbrella.” “I'm sorry,” Jack said, giving it to her. “I wasn't thinking. Please forgive me. I didn't mean to steal it.”
The next day he collected the umbrellas from the umbrella shop and got on the bus. As he sat down, a voice behind him said, “You have certainly had a successful day!” He turned around and saw the woman whose umbrella he had almost taken the day before.
