My husband is one of the world's soundest sleepers, and when he's finally awakened, he has trouble realizing what's going on. If the phone rings, he goes to the door. If the doorbell rings, he answers the phone. I learned to live with it, but I began to worry when the time approached for me to go to the hospital for our first child. What would happen if the baby started to come in the middle of the night, as most babies do? It turned out that my worries were well founded. Upon being awakened and told it was time to go, he said, “The keys are on the table. Drive carefully.”

Fellow workers at the tailor shop taught Andrew the alphabet. He taught himself to read and, when he was 17, his girl friend taught him how to write. By that time, Andrew was running his own tailor shop.

Every week during the fall Mr. Washington, my neighbor, is out raking little leaves into little piles. And every time it snows, he's out removing the white stuff with his shovel. So I tell him that leaves have been falling down for thousands and thousands of years, and the earth did pretty well before rakes and people. Old Mother Nature put the leaves where she wanted them and they made more earth. We need more earth, I tell him.
His yard does look neat, I must admit - if neatness is important. And he didn’t fall down getting to his car last snowtime, and I in fact did. Still, my yard has an Oriental carpet of red and yellow and green and brown. And his doesn’t. And I spent the same time he spent shoveling snow collecting it in bottles to mix with orange juice next July. And I taped the sound of it falling and then used the tape to go with Christmas presents.
