A lot of people in modern society can't do without this. This, often called an idiot box, has become a 'third parent' to our children and a 'second spouse' to our wives and husbands. Indeed, in some homes the children and the parents spend more time with this than each other. It is very serious that this takes up too much of our time and attention.

A French soldier, Charles Babier invented a system of night-reading. The system was difficult, but it gave Louis an idea. He made the system easier so that the blind could use it to read books. When he was fifteen, his new system was ready! Now he wanted blind schools to use this system, but the schools did not want it. Two years after he died, the blind schools began to use this system. Today it is used for all languages, and for math, science, writing music, and computers for the blind.

It was the worst day for Sally today. Everything seemed to go wrong. Her clock didn't wake her up on time in the morning. She skipped her breakfast and hurried out to her car. But the car keys were missing. She looked all over the house. She turned everything upside down. At last, she found them under the table. To make it worse, she was caught in the heavy traffic. It took almost 2 hours to get to work.

My ten-year-old son Andrew had a hard time with his painful tooth. So we went to a dentist’s office to have it pulled out. He looked a bit nervous. Entering the room, the dentist asked, "Well, Andrew, which one is the troublemaker?" Without hesitation, Andrew replied, "My brother. He is two years younger. He sometimes takes my toys away."

My wife and I are over sixty, living on a small income. Our neighbors, who are younger and making a better living, keep asking to borrow our truck. This is O.K. with us. However, the problem is that the gas tank is always empty when they return it. The least they could do is to fill the tank, isn't it? My wife always tells me to be patient, but I don't know how much longer I can hold my tongue.

There was a fire at a gas station yesterday. A worker spilled some oil on the floor. He then lit a cigarette and dropped it into the oil by mistake. The oil caught fire immediately. Soon the flames spread to other parts of the workshop. When the fire department arrived, the whole building was burning. Six fire trucks and twenty fire fighters took three hours to put out the fire. No one was hurt but the building was completely destroyed.

Tom was on vacation with his father. They were driving to a national forest in the mountains. They had to cross a very hot, dry desert on their way to the mountains. Their car didn't have air conditioning, and the temperature was over 39℃. Every five minutes Tom asked, "Are we almost there?" His father answered, "No, a few more hours." Then their car broke down. It simply stopped there in the desert. They were hundreds of kilometers from houses, gas stations, or people. They were hot, thirsty, and tired.

My brother is just a year older than I am. We have a lot of things in common. First of all, we look alike. I am 171 centimeters tall, and so is he. I have straight black hair and dark brown eyes, and so does he. We share many of the same interests, too. I love to play soccer, and he does, too. Both of us swim every day, but I can't dive, and neither can he. Sometimes, however, being so similar has its problems.

Camping in wilderness areas can be dangerous, so you must be prepared. You should learn about the area before you go there. You must be in good health, and you must have the right clothing and equipment. What if there is a storm? What if you get lost? For possible emergencies of this kind, you should bring extra food and water, a map, and a compass. Careful planning is the key to a safe and successful wilderness trip.

I read about your ABC Program in the Los Angeles Times, December 12, 2001. I am very interested in your program, which tries to cure sick people with pets. I think my cat, Dasher, would be a good visiting pet.
Dasher's a very cute, white, short-haired cat with a loving personality. Although he is only two years old, he does not run around very much. When strangers come to our house, he goes in and out of their legs and tries to get on their laps. I think a sick person would be very happy with him. He loves to be petted.
I would like to take part in your program, so I hope that you will accept my cat. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Lee
