To airlines and airport operators, it is an enemy. When the white blanket hides runways, airplanes cannot take off or land. To clear the air of it, it is necessary to cause the water droplets to join together and fall to the earth. Many kinds of weapons against it have been tried. Special chemicals were blown up into the air, so that the water droplets attracted each other and fell as rain. Sometimes an airplane dropped crystals of dry ice into it. Then snow fell and the air cleared.

When you travel overseas and come home, you usually have some foreign currency. But the small change in your wallet is seldom gathered together. Instead, it is usually dropped into somewhere and soon forgotten. So an organization called Change for Charity was founded to put some of that wasted money to use. This organization has placed a number of plastic boxes in airports. Returning travelers are invited to give their leftover foreign money in one of these boxes. It doesn’t matter what kinds of currency you have―pounds, yens or euros. Anything you donate will be very helpful for the homeless and the poor.

I sat on the beach, idly passing my fingers through the sand. I caught a large stone and looked at it for a moment, and then threw it away. I had seen a thousand worthless stones like it in the past two weeks. Yet, there was something unusual about this one that caught my attention. I went over to it and picked it up. I rubbed the dirt off it and examined it more closely. It did look like a diamond. The only thing that made me doubt my senses was the size of it. It was really big. “Oh, God!” I suddenly had difficulty breathing.

When Barnes said he would be a basketball player, he was laughed at because of his short height. But he decided to try. By the time he became a professional player, he was just five feet six inches tall, competing against players well over six feet. He competed successfully. He could even dunk the ball. Unfortunately, however, after a car accident Barnes could not move his body from the neck down. At first, he was terribly depressed. But, as time went by, strong will took over. He started to learn to paint with a brush in his mouth. He became an accomplished artist.

Bill and I are working for the Cosmos Bank. At first, Bill was so modest that everybody loved him. But after he was promoted last year, he acted as if he knew everything and was often rude. Everybody began to resent his rude behavior and frequent interference. Finally, I said to him, “Bill, don’t you know you’re a wise guy?” On hearing me, he shouted with joy, “Bravo, my boy! I’m really bright. Everyone should listen to me.” I got angry and attacked bitterly, “Please, please, don’t be such a wise guy and act as if you knew it all. Don’t you know everybody hates you?”

Last night, I watched a TV program about pollution. It blamed cars or taxis for causing much pollution and suggested that the number of cars be restricted. Also, it said that the taxi fare should be raised to encourage people to take buses. I disagree strongly with these views. Buses are uncomfortable, so I prefer to drive. Surely, we should have the right to drive! How do other citizens feel? Surely they will agree with me.

While Judy was at college, she became interested in the ideas of Henry D. Thoreau who didn’t believe in violence. And she was to protest against the whites who treated black people unfairly. At that time when blacks rode the buses, they couldn’t choose their seats. She was shocked whenever she saw blacks keep silent to this unfair treatment. She really wanted to change the situation. At the age of 30, with all the blacks in the city, she refused to ride the buses until all of them could ride with dignity. But she was absolutely against using any violence until her death.

Vegetarianism has been gaining popularity in a number of countries. What causes this trend? Some people give up meat because they believe it is bad for their health. And it makes sense, for it is true that fatty meats have been linked to many serious diseases like heart attacks or cancer. In other cases, it is considered as cruel to kill animals for meat when people have many other things to eat. Many vegetarians find it disgusting that people raise animals just to kill them. It can also be a valid reason to stop eating meat.

Tracie switched off the light, settled into her bed, and fell lightly asleep. After a while, Tracie woke up with a start to a sudden car horn. Tracie leapt from her bed and dashed toward the river. She ran as fast as she could the whole way. She jumped into the water. In the darkness she could see the driver and an infant below the rising water.

Surprisingly many people still believe that the disabled can’t work. I was turned down by over forty law firms because of my blindness. I had a doctor’s degree from Harvard Law School. However, it was impossible for me to practice law―not because of my lack of ability but because of my disability. The continuous frustration will always remain one of the most disappointing experiences in my life. Fortunately, things are changing.

When you walk across the road, do you have to concentrate on every step? Or when you go to sleep, do you need to concentrate on your breath? You don’t do any of these things with your conscious mind. You do them with your subconscious mind. We might say that the mind is like an iceberg. There is the part we see, the conscious, and the much larger part we don’t see, the subconscious. It is sure that our subconscious mind is responsible for a large part of our behavior.

Advertisements for a global cigarette maker show an attractive professional woman who says, “I keep the rule of society, but at the same time I am honest with my own feelings. So I don’t care if I behave against the so-called ‘rules’ as long as I really want to.” These ads are targeting the vast market of millions of Asian teenage girls. Tobacco companies say their advertising is aimed at women over 18 years old who are already smokers. But it’s a nonsense. The ads are intended for teenagers because that’s where the market is. Such ads should be restricted right now.

Mrs. Jones was in her kitchen with a friend. She looked out the window, pointed at the neighbor’s wash hanging on the clothesline, and said, “Just look at Mrs. Martin’s wash. I wonder how she does her laundry. Look at those stains on her laundry.” Cleaning the dirt of the window pane, her friend replied, “She may not wash the clothes well. But, look! Those stains aren’t on your neighbor’s wash-they’re on your window!” Poor Mrs. Jones! She should have known better.

When someone asks you if dams do good to us, you will say, “Yes.” You will add that they prevent flooding. Unfortunately, however, we are not fully aware of the consequences of what we are doing. Dams destroy ecosystems; dams prevent the movement of fish. Dams hold back silt which enriches the soil. Dams may be attacked by terrorists-an attack for a major dam could leave millions of people homeless. Dams also cause earthquakes : If relatively heavy water gets into the rock around the dam, all this weight actually leads to earthquakes.

Though exam results are important for your future, they are not everything. Don’t be discouraged. What you should do is to do your best next time. The following tips will help. First, you need to be in good physical shape. Eat properly and don’t stay up too late. A refreshed brain works more efficiently than a tired one. So you need some exercise. More important than the quantity of study is the quality. Give it all your concentration. Don’t let music or telephone calls disturb you. Read your notes. If there are things you need to learn by heart, try repeating them to yourself a few times, and then ask someone to test you.

On Tuesday, when they were practicing very hard for the big game next week, Jack suddenly slipped and couldn’t move at all. He couldn’t stand the pain and cried. Immediately he was taken to the hospital.
The doctor said, “Sorry, but you have your right foot broken. You have to stay here for some time.” Jack said to him, “When can I start to play basketball again?” He answered, “Not until next month.” Jack was very sad to hear the words. “Oh, no! I can’t play in the next big game,” Jack sobbed.
On Friday evening, all the members came to the hospital to cheer Jack up. Among them, there was a girl named Sue. She always looks happy when she practices basketball, but she usually sits on the bench during the games. She said just one thing to him with a smile, “Let’s cheer our team on from the bench this time.” There are some other members like her. When talking with them, Jack learned that playing the game wasn’t the only way to enjoy basketball. He thinks he can enjoy cheering the team on with them during the next game.
