The water level began to rise again. The thought of being sucked into that long pipe under the dam terrified him. Suddenly his legs went out, and he was hitting against the pipe. Soon, he found himself lying on a rocky hillside. The wind was blowing hard now. His teeth chattered and his body shook. Looking up, he saw gray clouds rolling in from the south-west. The temperature was dropping fast. He yelled for help, but his voice was lost in the roaring water. Who was there to hear him anyway?

There could be no doubt that these long-suffering people were really going to challenge the cruel Empire of Japan. Although success seemed impossible, I felt honored to be enlisted in the great adventure. Arriving at Pagoda Park at about 2 p.m., I took up a good position on the opposite side of the street, ready for action. A steady stream of students was flowing into the park, passing directly in front of the four or five Japanese police. They had no idea of the purpose of the student gathering. Suddenly there was a tremendous noise as the suppressed emotions of ten years were released in a deafening shout of “Manse.” I took snapshots as fast as possible, but as the students were running right at the camera, I knew that the pictures would be disappointing.

The general was determined not to allow① the enemy’s forces a return voyage, but to send them② to the bottom of the sea. He ordered his aides, “Do not announce my death until the battle is over! Do not weep! Go and beat the drum. Finish the enemy to the last one!”

A doctor, while driving home from a country club, picks up a young girl in a white dress. She climbs into the back seat of his car because the front seat is crowded with golf clubs, and tells him an address to take her to. As he arrives at the address, he turns to speak to her but she is gone. The curious doctor rings the doorbell of the address given to him by the mysterious girl. A gray-haired man answers the door and reveals that the girl was his daughter. She has died in a car accident exactly two years earlier.

In 1988, the United States suffered one of the worst droughts in history. As weeks went by without rain, crops died and river levels fell. Conditions were so bad that ships were unable to travel on the Mississippi River. As the water levels fell, the remains of old boats―Civil War gunboats, barges, and even a steamboat―were disclosed! In some places the once-sunken boats were left high and dry, and archeologists could walk right up to them. By studying the boats, these scientists were able to learn a great deal about day-to-day life on the barges and steamboats of the past.

This is a wonderful invention. No one knows who invented it or when it happened. A Swiss described it in a book in 1565. He said it was a piece of wood with lead (Pb) inside it. It wasn’t popular at that time. Then in 1795 someone started making it from graphite and it became very popular. Graphite is a kind of coal. Today people make it in the same way. They grind the graphite, make it into the shape of a stick, and bake it. Then they put it inside a piece of wood. It can write 50,000 English words or make a line 55 kilometers long.

There are many ways to communicate. Gestures using motions are very common in communication all over the world. Every gesture expresses different meanings and every country has its own language of gestures. Let’s look at one of the American gestures, for example. Tapping your temple with your forefinger or making a circular motion around your ear, usually while rolling your eyes towards someone and then pointing at them, means that you disapprove of that person’s behavior or opinion as being abnormal.
You’ll find the unknown word comes again, perhaps several times, and by the end of the chapter you’ll have guessed its meaning. That’s how we learn the meaning of words in our own language, isn’t it? When I’m telling a story to children, they seldom stop to ask what a word means. Even when they read, they don’t run for the dictionary every time they see an unknown word. When I read my New York Times these days I often find articles about space programs. There are sometimes words I don’t know―and some of them are so new that they’re not yet in the dictionaries. But I’m slowly beginning to understand what some of the words mean―simply by meeting them so often.

A few years ago a French toy company had an unusual contest―a “biggest brat” contest. The company had a prize for the child whose behavior was the worst in the world. Over 2,000 parents entered their children in the contest. “Our child is the world’s biggest brat!” they wrote. The parents made lists of all the bad things their children had done. Judges read the lists and chose the winner. She was a little girl from the United States. Her name was Lizzie, and she was four years old. Here are a few of the things Lizzie did to win the title “The World’s Biggest Brat!”

A space rock big enough to cause widespread damage will hit the Earth only about once every 1,000 years, but experts say the destruction would be so extreme that nations should develop a joint defense against space rocks. Some scientists estimated that the space rock would release about 10 megatons of explosive energy. Such a rock, estimated at 180 feet across, fell down through the atmosphere over Tunguska in Siberia in 1908 and destroyed trees across 800 square miles of forest land.

After Germany and Austria lost World War Ⅰ, inflation ruined their economies. The governments printed huge quantities of paper money. Naturally, the more they issued, the more worthless it became. By 1922, the money wasn’t even worth the paper on which it was printed. A clever Swiss soap maker bought up all the Austrian money that he could find. He realized that it was just the right size needed to wrap his soap. He printed the name of the soap on the blank side. Then, he put his money-wrapped soap on the market and waited. Just as he had hoped, his soap sales escalated. Many buyers bought the soap, hoping that someday the “wrappers” would be worth just as much as they were before the war.

There is a famous story about a faithful dog named Shep. ① When his master died, Shep followed the coffin to the train station. ② The next day, he began to wait for his master at the station and all he wanted was to see him again. ③ Soon most of the workers there lost their jobs for some reasons. ④ Day after day, he expected to see him step out of the train but to no avail. ⑤ Five years later, when his wait ended, people buried him at the station and built a statue in his memory.
In those days, many women were trying to work as pilots. But they faced a lot of competition from all of the male pilots who were looking for work. And it was still socially unacceptable for women to fly planes. Many of these women decided that the only way they could become working pilots was by starting their own businesses. They went into barnstorming, often as performers first, and then working pilots later. It was a hard life and a dangerous one. But some of them were successful.

In the court the rich man began shouting angrily at Scott. And the judge asked Scott to pay him right now. Taylor stepped forward and then said, “This poor man is my elder brother. I will pay you instead.” After he heard this, the rich man smiled, thinking about his payment. Then Taylor took a bag of money from his belt, a bag of copper coins. He bent down next to the rich man and shook the bag. “Listen. Do you hear this sound?” said he. “Of course I hear it,” shouted the rich man impatiently. “Well, then,” answered Taylor, “the problem is solved. The debt is paid. My brother has smelled your food, and you have heard his money.” The poor man was saved.
