It was AD 79. People lived on the hills surrounding Mount Vesuvius which was a volcano. The people remembered an earthquake which had happened seventeen years before. When he returned my paper, I was shocked. There was a big X through each of my answers. There had to be some mistake! I had written down exactly what Mr. Brown said. Then I realized that everyone in the class had failed. What had happened?
Very simple, Mr. Brown explained. He had made up all that story about the cattywampus. There had never been any such animal. The information in our notes was, ( ⓐ ), incorrect. In fact, when he was passing around the cattywampus bone (in truth, a cat’s), didn’t he tell us that no trace of the animal remained? He had described the shape, color, and other facts about an animal that did not exist. He had given the animal a funny name.
