This is designed primarily to protect an artist, a publisher, a writer, etc. against any illegal uses of his or her works. It supplies its holder with a kind of monopoly over the created material, which assures him or her of both control over its use and the benefits from it. Recently, the widespread use of the Internet has raised arguments over this issue. Some people say that the Internet is a great tool to get what you want freely, but others say it is contributing to the increasing unauthorized uses of other people’s original works.

People are ungrateful. It took me 61 years to find it out. I have 175 employees, men and women. At Thanksgiving, I sent them 175 choice turkeys as gifts from their boss. Only four thanked me. Two thanked me by notes and two said “Thank you” when they chanced to meet me in the hall. Because of their thanklessness, I have decided never to go out of my way to be nice again. Someone has said, “If you want to find gratitude, look for it in the dictionary.” I cannot but totally agree with him.

Zach began counting the people. There were over fifty people in line ahead of him. Everyone was anxious to get the free prize the store was giving out on its opening day. Zach was getting tired of standing. He started thinking of all the other things he could be doing. He couldn’t stand still. He began to mumble under his breath, “What’s taking so long?” Although he had been in line only a few minutes, he began to wonder whether the free prize was worth the wait.

I had never seen my father helping my mother with the household chores. When my mother was ill a week ago, however, he volunteered to go to the supermarket for her. She made a shopping list with a serial number on each item. “Here is the list,” she said. “I put the numbers for you.” A short while later, he returned and, very proud of himself, proceeded to unpack the grocery bags. He had one packet of sugar, two eggs, three chickens, four cakes of soap, five packets of biscuits, six cabbages and seven bottles of cooking oil.

The Tasmanian devil has powerful jaws―strong enough to crush bones to pieces. But despite this strength, the devil prefers to run rather than fight. Its top speed is only seven miles an hour. A dog can easily outrun a devil and kill it. The devil’s carefulness and its liking for weak lambs have given it a bad name among some farmers, but not among zoologists. They say the devil performs a valuable role in clearing dead bodies from bush and giving disease-bearing pests fewer places in which to breed.

Peter recognized the voice of his neighbor, Anne. Instantly he prepared the ladder and carried it around the building with Ricky. Thick smoke was pouring out of Anne’s apartment. “Get us down!” she screamed. “My mother can’t breathe.” “Peter, you can’t go back there. It’s too dangerous!” Ricky insisted. “The fire department is coming!” “Well, they’re not here yet,” Peter said. “Someone has to help those women.” He and Ricky extended the ladder and began to climb up. But they couldn’t come nearer to the window because of the smoke and flame.

If you see someone approaching, your eyes make his or her image and send the signals to your brain. Then the brain matches the visual image of this person with others in your memory. If the visual image matches that of a friend, your brain sends signals to your vocal cords and right arm to greet your friend with a hello and a handshake. And if it matches your teacher’s image, your brain orders your body to be bent toward him. The components in a computer interact in a similar way.

Adding an extra hour to your day is an effective way to relieve stress and to give yourself the feeling of having much more time throughout the day. This may mean going to bed an hour earlier, but an extra hour in the morning is so much more productive than trying to stay up an hour later at the end of the day. If you’ve never had an opportunity to enjoy that quiet hour before dawn, I urge you to start doing so tomorrow. You’ll be amazed at the richness, peace, and simplicity it can add to your life.

The Earth is different from other known planets, and one of the most notable differences is the presence of its atmosphere. ① Our atmosphere makes life possible on this planet. ② It supplies most of oxygen that animals must have to survive, as well as the carbon dioxide needed by plants. ③ It serves as a blanket to control temperature and thus provide a livable environment. ④ Some gases cause a gradual rise in the temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere. ⑤ It also protects the Earth from much of the sun’s harmful rays, which otherwise would be fatal to most life forms.
