They are now able to “see” and “talk,” using special computers. Scientists and engineers are even trying to give them a sense of touch, so that they will be able to feel the tools that they are holding. It may be a long time before they will be able to cook dinner or get the newspaper for us. But scientists believe that they can perform more complex tasks for us in the future. In fact, they are expected to deal with unexpected or dangerous situations or to do some kind of job better for us.

Every day, some newspaper prints a column about disorder. People drive faster than the speed limit, and drive through red light. People usually do not realize how disorderly our society is until they take a trip abroad. In the U.S. and Europe citizens usually call the police when they see laws being broken. They cannot bear to see others breaking the law without receiving punishment. You could probably never imagine something like that happening here in Korea. But more and more Koreans are demanding that something be done.

I envy my friend's success. He began as a simple cook, but today he's the head cook in a five-star hotel and he's even seen on TV. He knew what he loved and got the right education and experience. My work history, for various reasons, has not been steady. I started out in insurance, and then worked in construction. Now I'm in the moving business. I've discovered that “job hoppers” seldom succeed in life. I'm afraid I've learned that lesson too late.

As a new employee of an oil company, I tried to be friendly. One day I was pushed into a crowded elevator, which dropped workers on every floor as it went up. I felt a bit bored. Finally, just one man and I were left. Trying to be friendly, I said to him, “It sure takes a while to get to the top, doesn't it?” He said to me, with a smile, “Yes. Thirty-three years is a long time.” At first, I didn't understand him. Later I was told he was my boss.

You can eat much salad and exercise regularly, but all your healthy behavior counts little if you continue to smoke. Most people know that smoking is bad for them, but not many people know just how bad it is. Every cigarette shortens your life by 14 minutes. Of the 300 to 400 people who die every day in our country as a result of smoking, many are young smokers. The number of people under 70 dying from smoking-related diseases is larger than the total number of deaths caused by breast cancer, AIDS, and traffic accidents.

A woman who ran a restaurant came into a butcher’s shop. She asked the butcher how many chickens he had in the freezer. “Six,” he replied. “Pick out the three toughest,” she ordered. “I want them for my customers.” The butcher took out the six chickens, tested them with his fingers and finally said : “These are the three toughest.” “Very well,” said the woman. “Give me the other three. My customers have been complaining about the toughness of the chickens lately and I don't want to hear any more complaints.”

During World War I, many soldiers lost their eyesight on the battlefields. Guide dogs were first trained and used for those blind people in Germany. They are also known as leader dogs. Different kinds of dogs have been trained to serve as guide dogs at the training school. At the school, dogs are trained to help their masters deal with different situations. Most dogs finish their training in about three months.

I went to the seaside with my friends. We rented a boat because the sea and the weather were beautiful. We started to row, but about one mile out, the weather suddenly changed. It started to rain, and the waves began to roll higher and higher. So my friends and I agreed that we should go back. We tried to change the boat's direction, but as soon as we changed it, the oar broke. We had to wait for help because we couldn't do anything.

I pushed Jane's wheelchair toward the women's room. We stayed there until Jane felt better. Jane didn't want to see the movie, and we decided to go home. The boys were waiting for us. They came to us and started to apologize for their words. But I wouldn't forgive their insult that easy. These boys had insulted Jane because she was in a wheelchair. I wasn't going to simply let them say “Sorry” and forget the whole thing. They had to realize the emotional harm they had caused with their words.

“Talent” doesn't have to mean you paint great pictures. Caring for people is a talent. Teaching is a talent. Making people feel welcome is a talent. Solving problems is a talent. Too often we ignore our own talents. The potter says : “If I could make music....” The pianist says : “If I could make things with my hands....” Don't compare your abilities with others'. Accept what talents you have. Do what you can do. Happiness comes from developing your gifts, not wishing for someone else's.
